It is with immense sadness that the Society heard of the passing of Alan Thomas who, for more than fifty years, has supported the Society in a variety of roles from accompanist, chorus master, musical director and director.

Alan’s work with the Society can only be described as prolific and for many years barely a season of productions went by that there wasn’t an Alan Thomas masterpiece somewhere in the mix.

Alan’s dedication to the Society was such that in his later years he became a full member and served on the Society’s committee taking on the role of Production Co-ordinator. Even up until February this year Alan was still working with us directing what was to become his swansong play – ‘No Sex, Please - We’re British.’

It would be too mammoth a task to try to document here all of the things that Alan has done for us over the years and everyone who has been involved with Centenary over the past half a century will undoubtedly have their own fond memories to call upon to remember a great man.

Centenary Theatre Company finds itself much poorer today for not having his creative mind to call upon but during the time that we have known Alan, we have been much richer for it.

Rest in peace.

Centenary would like to invite all those who knew Alan to contribute to our website Guestbook, where your tributes, memories and condolences will be published.

At Centenary's Annual General Meeting, in June 2008, the Society was proud to award its highest honour - Life Membership - to two of the Society's longest serving and hardest working members, Edna Massey and John Postlethwaite.

John and Edna receiving their awards from Chairman Dan Grimes

Edna has been a member with Centenary for over 40 years and is still actively involved during rehearsals making what many call 'The finest Tea in Cheshire'.

John spent many successful years treading the boards with us before stepping out of the limelight and now working tirelessly back stage, you'd be hard pushed to find a finer 'props master'. He also spent many years as Vice-Chairman for the company and has now FINALLY received Life Membership.

Edna and John both join a select group of Life Members of Centenary:

Life Members
Frank Crawley
Roy Western
Pat Taylor
Anita Warburton
Audrey Flint
John Postlethwaite
Edna Massey

Three Centenary Members received long-service awards at the 2008 AGM.  These awards are recognition of service to the performing arts within Society's that are members of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association.

Sheila Cummins and Audrey Flint both received their awards for their achievement of 35 years service and Pat Jackson for achieving 25 years.

Well done ladies!

We are delighted to announce that Centenary picked up two Noda Awards at the annual award ceremony in Blackpool. The awards went to Igrayne McDermott for her portrayal of LV in 'The Rise and Fall of Little Voice' and a shared award went to the society and Walter Brown for the programme of the same show, congratulations go to Igrayne and Walter and, of course, all those who were nominated for Centenary this year. A special congratulation also to Roy Western, a stalwart Centenary life member, who won the illustrious raffle on the night as well.

After the overwhelming success of the Christmas concerts that Centenary produced in 2007, we are now happy to confirm that we are taking the concerts ‘on tour’. If you or somebody you know is organising any event that would benefit from quality live entertainment then please get in touch with us via our Contacting Centenary  page.
